Before 19x19: Practice These 3 Things First

Many beginners jump to 19x19 too early and feel overwhelmed. If you build rhythm first, large-board games become much more enjoyable.

Drill 1: Use a Stable Opening Rhythm

On 9x9, practice a simple corner-edge-center flow. Do not chase complex sequences yet; focus on clear purpose per move.

Drill 2: Limit Thinking Time Per Move

Set 15 to 20 seconds per move. Force yourself to check safety, liberties, and connection first.

Drill 3: Log One Mistake Type Per Game

Examples:

  • Forgot to add liberties
  • Invaded too early into strong enemy shape
  • Played too many moves in one local area

Wrap-up

Practice this routine for one week, then return to 19x19. You will read positions with much more confidence.
